An Eye for an Eye
As owner of Dirty Deeds, a tech-savvy company specializing in the age-old art of revenge, Eden Smith knows first-hand that secrecy is critical. But when a dead body washes up on the shores of Lake Michigan clutching her business card, Eden’s well-constructed world begins to fall apart. Apparently, she’s not the only one with a passion for payback, and staying alive to outsmart a killer has become her most important job of all.
A Game for a Game
Hardened homicide detective Kelly Riordan is convinced Eden Smith is hiding more than she’s willing to admit. Years on the force have taught him that nothing is what it seems, and that couldn’t be truer than when it comes to investigating the alluring owner of a revenge-for-hire business. But revealing her past could put everything Eden has worked for in jeopardy. And trusting a man like Riordan goes against the very instincts that have kept her alive this long.
First Line: “The office door flew open, and Eden froze at her desk, her gloved hand poised with the syringe in mid-air.”
“Success is the sweetest revenge…”
Eh?… What does success have to do with anything? Let’s not use such advanced vocabulary here! We’re going to keep it simple: revenge is the sweetest revenge.
Dirty Deeds is my romantic, revenge-y, succulent drink. My passion for payback just broke the Richter scale and the tsunami we have created is going to be named after AJ Nuest. Y’all should just call me Nom de Payback because I am a NEW WOMAN!
Eden Smith is the brilliant owner of a tech-savvy company named Dirty Deeds. She is a bandit, a chameleon, and she gets paid to get revenge. Eden evens the score for those who have suffered unsatisfied abuse. Cheaters? Beaters? Corporate espionage? Call Eden Smith… if that’s even her real name.
Things get messy for Eden when an elderly couple stumbles upon a dead body in front of their home; Ruby, a sweet girl trapped into the world of prostitution. In Ruby’s hand is a business card with none other than “Dirty Deeds” inscribed on it… staaahp. Is someone setting Eden up?
Eden Smith has one rule: no death. Well, she also has a rule stating she shouldn’t mix her personal life with business… that is, until Detective Kelly Riordan starts coming around acting like a hunk-o-man on the PROWL. My heart, oh, my heart. Kelly is greased lightning on a silver platter! ⚡ Lock up those baby blue eyes and stay away from Sandra Dee, you wildabeast!!
Now we have Eden, the dreamy Detective Kelly Riordan, and him…The man behind this setup. Why did he target Eden’s company? Why do these bodies keep appearing along with Dirty Deeds’ business cards? The death of sweet Ruby, the soon to be death of Eden… Who is this man and what sick vendetta does he have?
It is time for Eden to disappear (which she is generally good at), but Detective Riordan has made it very clear that she is his to protect. (Can you say #AlphaSyndrome??) Eden is a mystery he craves to uncover, and this desire to protect her soon becomes a hot lusty obsession.
She’d been everything he had. Every last part of him… He wasn’t leaving.
Yah yah. You say that now, Detective…
While Eden and Kelly have their hot summer-night-love-jamboree, there is a contemporaneous struggle for power. Is Eden the boss? Or Kelly? Eden is always ahead of the Kelly… Or is she? Oh boy, these two are toxic. The constant power struggle results in one thing: they fight. A lot.
I don’t know who you think you’re fooling with this major bitch fest you got going, but it ain’t me.
Hey now, sweet boy. Don’t be using harsh words like that! She’s “vulnerable…”
Well, apparently not vulnerable enough… because while there is all this drama, she manages to get the best revenge on Kelly’s troll of an ex-girlfriend and ruins the Senator’s squeaky clean image. Oh yes, there’s not just one revenge story here. AJ Nuest gives us the aftershock, each surge of events, and feeds us ambrosial secrets that slowly unravel.
The truth is, I want to know what I’ve been missing, and I want to find out with you. So, you have my word, Detective. No matter what happens, I won’t sell you out.
With Eden on the run, Kelly trying to hold her back, and their non-stop arguments about how law and order should work, how are these combustible personalities supposed to unite? The one time Eden decides to trust, can Kelly do the same, or is he going to unintentionally sell her out and risk Eden’s life?
If God or Fate or whatever supreme being controlled the universe had decided to keep her around a little longer… She would’ve loved him…or not loved him, regardless of whether or not he loved her back.
Friends. Books are meant to engulf the imagination, and take up residence in our minds. AJ Nuest not only trapped my brain in her riptide, but she drowned me in its sweet elixir. Eden is a lost soul latching onto different characters as she serves revenge; not truly knowing herself. Kelly is her law and order, and the man who gives her an identity and confidence that he will be there for her. Well, let’s see if he’s there for her at the end, eh?
I have never had a constant stream of ★★★★★ reads fall into my lap like this and Dirty Deeds is everything I have been looking for in a mystery romance: saucy, suspenseful, and for once in my life I could not predict the killer.
Password: Tsunami AJ is coming
Now, if you’ll excuse me, Nom de Payback has some… things… to take care of.
