Loving someone is something you never forget how to do . . .
Zoe Hornsby has enough on her plate. Her pet grooming business tucked inside her friends’ veterinarian clinic is busy, and all her free time outside of work is dedicated to caring for her mother’s ailing mind. Dating is certainly not on her agenda. For all she cares, the town gossips of Redwood Ridge, Oregon, can set their matchmaking sights on someone else. Because no way would she consider sexy veterinarian Drake O’Grady her perfect guy. Once upon a time, she may have harbored a little crush, but he’d only had eyes for her best friend. And the crazy attraction building between her and Drake now? Down boy, down.
After Drake lost his wife to cancer, he’s finally clawed his way out of grief and beginning to feel more like a part of the human race. But he’s appalled to learn his prying family thinks he’s ready to jump in the dating pool. And the woman they thrust at him couldn’t be more inappropriate. As his dead wife’s best friend, Zoe is off limits. Even if they seem to share a common sadness, she is too potent a personality to get romantically tangled with. Yet she’s making his heart beat and blood roar like he never thought it could again. And he doesn’t want to just exist anymore . . .
First Line: “I’m going to kill you.”
And when I thought Kelly Moran didn’t have any more tricks up her sleeve, she gives me friends-to-lovers unlike anything I’ve ever read before. New Tricks is flooded with guilty pleasure.
We are back in Redwoodridge, Oregon for the third standalone in this series. Prepare yourselves for the gravitational pull this book will have on your heart.
Drake O’Grady has lost his wife to cancer. Are you bawling yet? Yes. Zoe Hornsby’s mother is ill and she slaves through each day for her mother to last one more night. If you weren’t bawling, you are now.
Zoe is also Drake’s late wife’s best friend.
Let me say this: Kelly Moran knows how to make my head spin from cupid’s arrow. Zoe and Drake make ME feel guilty just reading about their growing affections! Are they mistaking their feelings for much-needed comfort? Is Drake really over the death of his wife? How do you even recover from something like that?!
Throughout New Tricks, I was bombarding myself with questions. I swear I must have read the book back to front because I was dying to know what would happen. Oooh and I certainly found out 😉
“Is it the thought of moving on that’s upsetting you?”
The room spun, and he cleared his throat. “No, it’s the who.”
Heather was gone and she wasn’t coming back. He’d loved her with everything he had in him, had for more than half his life and would until the day he died, but he was ready to find love again. Maybe not in the same way. There were several kinds and types of love, and none of them were any more significant or trivial in their affliction. But, yeah. He wanted that connection to someone again.
“Is the hesitation because Zoe was Heather’s friend?”
Here we see our first sprinkling of guilt. Admission. Unquenchable desire. Drake falling in love with his dead wife’s best friend? That’s just…dirty. Heather is rolling around in her grave probably plotting revenge for when it’s their turn to take a trip to heaven. Well, they don’t have to worry about meeting her there because they’re going straight to HELL.
Guilt clawed at his throat…
Guilt. Lust. Desire. More guilt.
Then it happens. IT. You know, the thing only Kelly Moran can do? A passageway miraculously appears in the middle of nowhere that presents our protagonists with another option. A pathway to healing and forgiveness.
Her gaze swept his face as she swallowed. Gone was the uncertainty and apprehension and guilt he’d born witness to the past few months. “Don’t forget, I’m yours.”
*fanning face* A naughty fiend with a heart of gold? YeaOK I’m done for.
New Tricks is achingly sexy. I was tugged behind The USS Kelly Moran and drowning in her wake. The worst part?…I didn’t want the drowning to end.
