*FTC Disclaimer: I received a review copy of The Vixen’s Lead from Marnye Young in exchange for an honest review. I have in no way been influenced by the author, narrators and/or publisher’s generosity.
I want vengeance so badly that I can almost taste it. It’s all I’ve ever wanted. So, I did what anyone in my unique position would do. I slapped on a secret identity and became an internationally renowned thief, known as The Fox. Nobody knows me. Nobody can catch me.
Or so I thought…
It turns out; I have what they want. Special abilities. And trust me, these abilities are coveted–and dangerous. Now, I don’t know who to trust or where to go. Peril lurks on every corner as I try to uncover my past and origin. Teaming up with unlikely allies may be my only chance at survival or my biggest mistake. Only time will tell.
I’m Kit Davenport and this is only the beginning.
** Warning: This book is a Reverse Harem. It also contains violence, sex, bad-language and content which some readers may find triggering. **
First Line: “In the background, the shadowy outline of a naked woman haunted a painting of lilies.”
Narrator Review (Marnye):
Marnye Young is without a doubt one of my favorite narrators. Every audiobook I’ve listened to of hers is wildly different. I never know what to expect, but I always know I’ll fall in love with it. She brings out the underlying emotion in a text. As if on cue, my emotions spew over into a messy, ugly puddle whenever I listen to her.
This narration is very dark, creamy and savory, but at the same time light and fun. What better person than Marnye Young to narrate a wide range of characteristics? She wholeheartedly embodies the heroine’s personality and expertly conveys the darkness of her past.
There are times the pace was a little faster than her usual reads, but I didn’t mind this much. I’m putty in Marnye’s hands and I will gladly let her jiggle me around at whatever rate she wants.
A stellar narration can exponentially enhance an already good book, and that’s Marnye’s talent. I could write a novel about this woman. Then I’d probably ask her to narrate it because, well, why would I choose anyone else?
Narrator Review (Sam):
Are these men cultivating in a laboratory of hotness and I don’t know about it? Like, bring these fellas out into society, will ya? I’ve never had a boyfriend (don’t judge), let alone FIVE like our leading lady. And this man narrates them all!
I adore Matt Haynes. His voice has just the right amount of depth without sounding too gravely. His voice is soft, though, so I had to turn up the volume to hear him. Other than that, I drooled my way through this audiobook. I particularly enjoyed his pacing. It was a nice, smooth stroll down Swoony Lane.
The listen is different than most audios in the sense that both Marnye and Matt narrate at the same time. Meaning, Marnye performs the main narrative while Matt performs the dialogue when applicable. I think this is brilliant and the editing of that couldn’t have been easy.
I love my men loyal. In this case, we have five.
This is a reverse harem book where our heroine, Kit, has more than one lover. Eep! I didn’t think I’d like this book. (LOL) I mean, just Googling “reverse harem” is enough to send me to church. But Tate James really sculpted each of these men perfectly. They’re all wonderfully unique.
And then there’s Kit. After experiencing trauma in her childhood, she’s not afraid to take out the whip and show everyone who is boss. Oooo, and she’s a BOSS. Nothing can hold her back, lemme tell you. Her BFF, Lucy, is her geek sidekick and I’m all over dat juju. Have you ever seen the TV series Revenge? Yeah. We all need a nerd for a best friend.
“After catching my breath, I brushed some glass out of my wig then swung over the fire escape and descended to the street below.”
Snort. I can do that, too.
Our heroine is eighteen and she has some pretty epic powers—yet doesn’t even know why. She’s also a klepto—LOL—and I understand why. She’s super sly, yet sometimes all over the place. She’s this walking juxtaposition and I read that as her way of coping with her past. Who knows if that was the author’s intent, but I’m picking up what’s being put down!
Kit and Lucy team up and are total BA’s. This feisty duo is headstrong and determined to get what they want. Oh, and along the way there are five hot guys. No big deal, they just want to “investigate” The Fox, Kit’s secret identity. Umm, can I have an awesome spy/thief name like that? They certainly get to…err..investigate her, alright. Hur hur.
I loved this book. It was a mix of adventure and romance. A little bit of mystery. A lot a bit of sauciness and fantasy. I just couldn’t stop.
This was my first read by Tate James and I’m hooked.
